Tyco Plastics & Adhesives Launches New Aerospace Tape

Polyken® 296FR cargo pit tape passes Boeing, Airbus, U.S. and European flame retardant (FR) content testing regulations

PRINCETON, NJ - Tyco Plastics & Adhesives, a Tyco International company, is introducing a new aerospace tape for seam sealing in aircraft cargo compartments. Polyken® 296FR (click here for photo) offers seam sealing and repair of cargo compartment liners for use on covering pins and rivets where high adhesion and flame resistance is critical.

Manufactured in Bristol, R.I., by Tyco Adhesives, a business unit of Tyco Plastics & Adhesives, Polyken 296FR cargo pit tape passes Boeing, Airbus, U.S. and European flame retardant (FR) content testing. The aerospace tape meets all parameters of Boeing Material Specification BMS 5-146 covering the requirements for cargo liner joint sealing tape. Polyken 296FR does not contain polybrominated biphenyl ethers (PBDEs), abiding by the recent European Union directive (EU 76/769/EEC) eliminating certain fire retardant materials. It also features a unique construction that minimizes adhesive residue when the tape is removed.

"Polyken 296FR properly seals the edges of the cargo liner panels, providing a safe, airworthy configuration," said Mark Britton, Tyco Adhesives' field marketing development specialist for aerospace. "Our flame-retardant acrylic adhesive bonds very well to cargo liners. When it's properly applied and maintained, Polyken 296FR will help prevent the escape of smoke, halon and fire that could potentially cause a hazard to the airplane occupants or structure."

The tape's glass cloth design resists flame penetration for added safety, and its high adhesion properties eliminate lifting and curling. Polyken 296FR does not wrinkle when it is applied. Wrinkles in cargo pit compartments can potentially create an air gap which could allow smoke or halon gas into the passenger compartment in the event of a fire. When it is unwound, Polyken 296FR hangs very straight and resists curling, making the tape easy to apply to cargo panels.

While it has an aggressive adhesive system, the aerospace tape is extremely repositionable and can be applied and reapplied. The acrylic adhesive cures in 24 hours, creating an ideal bond. Polyken 296FR also is highly comformable and flexible to accommodate angles and turns.

Polyken 296FR tape is manufactured in white and is available printed with FAA specifications FAR 25.853a and FAR 25.855d. An unprinted version also is available. It features a single-coated construction with a blue plastic, easy-release liner. It is manufactured in width sizes of 1, 2, 3 and 4 inches and ships in quantities of 48, 24, 16 and 12 rolls per case, respectively. All rolls are 36 yards long. Polyken 296FR has an adhesion-to-cargo liner rating of 30 oz./in., an adhesion-to-steel rating of 45 oz./in. and a tensile strength of 133 lbs./in. Total tape thickness is 7.5 mils, and total weight is 6.87 oz./sq. yd.
