The PT6T/T400 Twin-Pac is a twinned turboshaft based on the highly successful PT6 turboprop. After nearly 30 years of operation, the Twin-Pac continues to set standards for helicopter engine reliability, durability and low ownership cost.

It has accumulated over 27 million hours of operation in both commercial and military helicopters, and be found serving climates and environments throughout the world. This engine consists of two free-turbine power sections coupled to a common reduction gearbox with a single output shaft.

The main components include:

  • Annular air intake with protective screen
  • 3 stage axial plus single stage centrifugal compressor
  • Single stage compressor turbine plus single stage free power turbine
  • Reverse flow annular combustor
  • Interturbine gas temperature thermocouple system

    Operation
Inlet air enters the engine through an annular plenum chamber near the rear of the engine and flows forward through the successive compressor stages. The flow is directed outward by the centrifugal compressor through pipe diffusers before turning 90ยบ and entering the combustion chamber, where the flow is reversed. Fuel is added and the gases produced by combustion are once again reversed to expand forward through each turbine stage. After leaving the turbines, the gases are collected in the exhaust case and discharged through exhaust ports near the front of the engine.
