Payload Systems, Inc.-Flight data recorder is a 5-lb., crash-survivable flight data recorder designed for general aviation aircraft. The system does not require connection to existing aircraft systems, except for power, and records time, position, altitude, three-axis accelerations, three-axis magnetic fields, and temperature. Subsequent post-processing permits reconstruction of a flight, including aircraft attitude (pitch, yaw, roll, and heading). An optional pilot-controlled feature records intercom dialogues and ambient cabin noise. The recorder includes two assemblies: the electronic assembly, measuring 3.0 x 3.2 x 5.2 in. and the memory protection assembly, measuring 3.0 x 3.0 x 4.2 in. The unit can also record data for use in training or maintenance activities. In these configurations, the memory protection assembly is not installed. Instead, flight information is recorded onto a CompactFlash solid-state memory card, which can be removed after a flight, inserted into a PCMCIA adapter card for flight playback/log on a standard PC.
