The flat-panel multifunction control display unit (MCDU) uses a large, full-color active-matrix liquid crystal display (AMLCD) with a compact (7.125" H x 6.0" D) form factor. The unit is designed to support incremental stages of CNS/ATM implementation.

The unit features a built-in menu for switching between subsystems and a choice of databuses (ARINC 429 or MIL-STD-1553). It is designed to communicate with a single, primary system but includes six additional ports for other ARINC 739 subsystems such as ACARS. It is ARINC 739/429 compatible with graphical interface enhancements and an RS-422 interface is included for graphics, video, and bitmap presentation.

Designed as a drop-in replacement unit for existing aircraft navigation systems on upgrade programs such as CNS/ATM or GNSS, the unit includes a spare card slot to accommodate new features and flexible reconfiguration of front panel keys. The MCDU can receive software modifications uploaded into the unit without removal from the aircraft.
