BAE Systems And Heart Aerospace Collaborate To Develop Battery For Electric Aircraft

Revolutionary Lightweight Battery for Commercial Electric Aircraft Will Enable Efficient Regional Air Travel

Gothenburg /PRNewswire/ - Leading aerospace and defense company BAE Systems and Swedish electric aircraft manufacturer Heart Aerospace have announced a collaboration to define the battery system of Heart's ES-30 regional electric aircraft.

The battery will be the first of its kind to be integrated into an electric conventional take-off and landing (eCTOL) regional aircraft, ensuring efficient operation with zero emissions and low noise levels.

“Our industry-leading solution leverages decades of expertise to deliver the technologies and systems needed to drive the evolution of sustainable transportation,” said Ehtisham Siddiqui , vice president and general manager of controls and avionics solutions. at BAE Systems. “We are delighted to collaborate with Heart Aerospace to develop an innovative battery system for its electric aircraft. »

The program will build on more than 25 years of BAE Systems expertise in the electrification of large heavy industrial vehicles. Today, the company has more than 15,000 power and propulsion systems operational worldwide. Work for this program will be performed at the company's state-of-the-art facility in Endicott, New York .

"BAE Systems' extensive experience in developing batteries for heavy-duty land applications and its expertise in developing critical aerospace safety control systems make it an ideal partner for this next important step for the ES-30 and the aviation industry,” said Sofia Graflund , COO of Heart Aerospace. “We look forward to decarbonizing air travel together. »

The ES-30 aircraft will be powered by four electric motors and offers a range of 200 kilometers in all-electric mode, a range of 400 kilometers in hybrid mode with 30 passengers and the ability to fly up to 800 kilometers with 25 passengers.

The ES-30 will also have a cost effective and scalable upgrade option as battery technology develops. The battery upgrade roadmap allows for more usable power per weight, allowing for longer flight times and expanded route options.

Heart Aerospace has recorded a total of 230 orders and 100 options for the ES-30, along with letters of intent for an additional 108 aircraft.
